National Rebuilding Day, April 26, is a day when thousands of volunteers join together to provide much needed and sometimes critical and/or lifesaving repairs, for vulnerable families in various communities.
The day is part of a month-long call to service in April, started by the non-profit organization Rebuilding Together. According the website, during the month of April almost 20,000 volunteers work to rebuild and offer support in homes around the country.
While this is a time to repair and rehabilitate homes, use the day to support housing projects around the country. Rehabilitate homes in your neighborhood, or help build homes for low-income residents. Whatever the gesture, learn how you can make a difference and support non-profit housing organizations.
A new or rehabilitated house provides stability and security for families and children, increasing physical safety and health, and educational and job prospects.
Volunteer at one of these housing organizations!
Rebuilding Together is a nonprofit housing organization that opened in 1988. The organization works to “transform the lives of low-income homeowners by improving the safety and health of their homes and revitalizing our communities.” While the organization works year round to provide housing for these families, the “annual effort demonstrates the positive effects of the home and neighborhood revitalization on the overall health of homeowners, families and communities.”
Habitat for Humanity
Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity was created to offer affordable housing to those in need. Now, forty years later, the international non-profit organization has provided affordable housing for 6.8 million people, according to the website. Habitat’s vision is a “world where everyone has a decent place to live.”
So if you are volunteering to repair a home or build a new one, help build that world. Find your local Habitat for Humanity or Rebuilding Together affiliates and get involved this National Rebuilding Day!
